Tourist spots 'dark, mound-like shape' in Loch Ness

A tourist visiting Loch Ness has reported seeing a "dark, mound-like shape" protruding from the water, reigniting interest in the legend of Nessie. Jocelyn Boyce, who was in Scotland with her family from Barcelona, claims to have spotted the unusual shape while at Urquhart Castle on August 6. She described the object as being almost black and estimated it to be about half a mile away from her vantage point.

According to Boyce, the water was calm and visibility was good at the time of the sighting. She captured approximately 13 seconds of video footage using her iPhone 16, employing the phone's zoom feature to record the distant object. In her submission to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, she noted that the dark shape was visible in one of her photographs, but in another taken shortly after, it had vanished from view.

This sighting adds to a growing number of reports in 2026, which have seen a resurgence in claims of Nessie sightings. Interestingly, reports of the Loch Ness Monster had dwindled in previous years, leading some experts to express concern for the creature's well-being. Rob Long from the Loch Ness Exploration team previously indicated that the lack of sightings could suggest that Nessie might have perished. Long noted that it was unusual for their team to go for extended periods without any sightings, stating, "There is a real fear for her as it normally is not this long that we go without a single glimpse."

Despite the previous scarcity of sightings, 2024 was reportedly notable for providing some of the most compelling evidence of Nessie's existence, including sonar recordings that were described as among the best ever obtained. Long remarked that while the number of sightings had decreased, the quality of evidence had improved. However, he expressed concern over the current lack of any viewings, stating, "Now there's nothing."

The recent sighting by Boyce has sparked renewed interest in Loch Ness and the legend of its elusive inhabitant.
