‘A large, dark object’: New Loch Ness Monster encounter takes sightings for 2026 up to six

A recent encounter has added to the growing list of Loch Ness Monster sightings in 2026, bringing the total to six. The latest sighting was reported by US tourist Nickolas Weigand, who captured images of a large, dark object breaking the surface of Loch Ness on May 18. Weigand was on a bus tour along the loch's shore when he filmed the mysterious object through the window of the moving vehicle.

Weigand recounted his experience on the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, stating that he was focused on his camera's viewfinder rather than directly observing the loch. He explained that the bus was traveling at a considerable speed, which limited his ability to watch the footage in real-time. It was only after the tour concluded that he reviewed the recordings and noticed something unusual in the water.

In his account, Weigand noted, "After careful review of the footage, I discovered something mysterious and unknown deep in the water quite far away from shore. In the footage and in the still photographs I captured from the video, you can clearly see a dark image of something breaking the water surface as we drove by." He estimated the size of the object based on the distance from the bus to the water, using roadside signs as reference points.

Weigand's sighting follows a series of three encounters reported in late April, which had already sparked interest among enthusiasts of the Loch Ness legend. The current year has seen a notable uptick in sightings, with five of the reported encounters coming from visitors on-site at Loch Ness. The sixth sighting was made via one of the live webcams that monitor the loch continuously.

In contrast, the previous year saw only six in-person sightings of the elusive creature throughout the entire year. With more than half of 2026 still remaining, it appears that this year could surpass the previous total, suggesting a resurgence in reported encounters with the famed creature.

While the Loch Ness Monster continues to captivate the imagination of both locals and tourists, the authenticity of these sightings remains a topic of debate.
