Tony Solano, who was just 16 at the time, recalls a camping trip with a friend that turned into a harrowing experience. Armed with several firearms, they ventured into the bushland near Sandy Creek, hoping to hunt pigs. However, they encountered something far more unsettling. Solano describes the moment vividly, noting the sounds of snapping branches and the imposing figure they glimpsed in the underbrush, estimated to be between 2 to 3 meters tall.

In a panic, Solano's friend fired shots at the creature, but they missed. The two boys spent a sleepless night beside their loaded guns, gripped by fear. After regaining their composure, they returned with their biology teacher to document the encounter, making a plaster cast of what they claimed was a massive footprint left by the creature.

This incident sparked a wave of interest in the Yowie, leading to the establishment of a local monument. A wooden statue, crafted from a single beech log, was erected in Yowie Park, serving both as a warning and a lure for curious visitors. Over the years, this statue became a target for vandalism, with trophy hunters often removing parts of it as souvenirs. Eventually, the original statue deteriorated and was replaced, only for the new version to face similar fates. In response, the town opted for a fiberglass replica that was designed to be gender-neutral.

Despite the ongoing interest, sightings of the Yowie in Kilcoy have been sporadic, and the town is not considered a hotspot for encounters. The legend continues to attract tourists, yet the elusive nature of the creature remains a point of debate among cryptozoologists and enthusiasts alike.

As of late 2024, reports indicate that the statue, a symbol of Kilcoy's unique claim to fame, has disappeared. The circumstances surrounding its removal remain unclear, leaving residents and visitors to ponder the fate of both the statue and the Yowie itself.
