Loch Ness experts reveal sightings hotspots ahead of huge new search

Experts have identified key locations around Loch Ness that are believed to be hotspots for sightings of the elusive Loch Ness Monster, ahead of a major search event scheduled for late May. The annual quest, organized by the Loch Ness Experience, invites experts, enthusiasts, and curious visitors to participate in a collective hunt for the legendary creature, known affectionately as Nessie. This year's event is set to take place from May 28 to 31.

The selected observation points include well-known sites such as Urquhart Castle, Urquhart Bay, Bunloit, Fort Augustus, and Lochend. These locations were chosen based on their historical significance in reported sightings and their strategic views across the expansive 23-mile loch. Alan McKenna from Loch Ness Exploration emphasized the importance of vantage points in gathering data about potential sightings, stating, "For this year’s Surface Watch, we have identified viewpoints that give volunteers strong views across different parts of the loch, including areas close to recent reported sightings."

The Surface Watch event is scheduled for May 30, where volunteers will be positioned at the carefully selected viewpoints to monitor the water for any unusual activity. McKenna noted that having observers in various locations could significantly enhance the understanding of any phenomena that may occur on the surface of the loch. He described the initiative as a "brilliant way" for the public to engage with the search for Nessie, highlighting the importance of community involvement in gathering data.

Volunteers will receive briefings on what to look for and how to accurately record their observations, which could contribute to the ongoing quest to uncover the mysteries of Loch Ness. In addition to the Surface Watch, the event will feature a range of activities, including underwater exploration, hydrophone monitoring, discussions on local folklore, and live debates about the legendary creature.

Although the existence of Nessie remains unconfirmed, the fascination surrounding the Loch Ness Monster continues to draw interest from around the globe. The upcoming search event promises to be a significant gathering for those intrigued by the myths and legends of this iconic Scottish landmark.
